Final Oral Round

The 16 best teams from the 7 Selection Rounds of EMC2 all over the world will progress to the Final Oral Round in Geneva, the headquarters of the World Trade Organization.

Final Oral Round 2008

This year, the Final Oral Round took place in Geneva, from Tuesday, 29 April to Sunday, 4 May. Here, the teams have plead in front of a panel of distinguished WTO law specialists.

The results of the Final Oral Round of the EMC2

 

Saturday, the 3rd of May. On this date the Grand Final of the Final Oral Round of the 6th edition of the ELSA Moot Court Competition on WTO law took place.

 

Below you can find the final results of this years’ competition. A more detailed report will be published on the 30th of June. The individual scores will also be available in this report.

 

Grand Final

  • Winner – team 042 – the team from the Universidad de Los Andes (Colombia)
  • Runner-up – team 010 – the team from the National Taiwan University (Taiwan)

The Grand Final was held in Room W at the World Trade Organization on Saturday, 3rd May 2008. This was the most fiercely contested Grand Final in the history of the EMC². Both teams rose to the occasion and it was obvious that they had undertaken substantial additional preparation for the Geneva competition since participating in the Selection Rounds.

 

The seven members of the EMC² FOR Grand Final Panel (Mr Alejandro Jara – Deputy Director General of the WTO; Dr Werner Zdouc - Director of WTO Appellate Body Secretariat); Dr Gabrielle – Special Counsel to the Director General of the WTO; Professor (Dr) Shin-yi Peng – 2008 Case Author, National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan; Professor (Dr) Peter Van Den Bossche – Maastricht University, Holland; Professor Mary Footer – Nottingham University, England; and Dr Arthur Appleton – representing World Trade Institute, Switzerland)were extremely impressed with the quality and congratulated all the participants on their indepth understanding of the Case and the difficult telecommunications issues, as well as their commitment to the competition which resulted in outstanding oral presentations. This is the first time an EMC² Grand Final Oralist scored a perfect score!

 

Semi-Finals

At the conclusion of the FOR Preliminary Rounds, four civil jurisdiction teams from three continents progressed to the Elimination Rounds. In the first Semi Final, the 3rd ranked Universidad de Los Andes (Colombia) defeated the 1st ranked University of Leuven (Belgium). Whilst in the second Semi Final, the 2nd ranked National Taiwan University (Taiwan) defeated the 4th ranked Martin Luther University (Germany).

  • 2nd – Ms. Destiny Deas – Team 040 – Duke University – USA
